About the work
Creative research about the theatre piece “A PREGAÇÃO” (1989), directed by João Brites with Theatre O Bando. Starting with twenty seven photos, some objects more or less in good state and the smell of grilled fish engraved in my memory, among other sources, the horizon of this project is to create an intermedia solo piece entitled PREGAÇÃO. It is expected to be a densification of traces. What still resounds of a show one has seen twenty three years ago? What remains of a theatre piece inside the briefcases and behind the technical workshops? I think I can evoke without creating a monument, evoke through an answer in the form of renewed questions and enigmas. How to approach today the intervening attitude of Vieira? How to continue the gesture of appropriation done by O Bando? As a mosaic, the text and the piece remain open to new relations, what stimulates the exploration of lateral rewritings, for every monument to culture may end as a monument to barbarism. The experiment attempted to evaluate short-term tangible effects on cognition after the Real-Time composition (RTC) method. It is known that a processing bottleneck exists in the brain such that as the temporal overlap between two stimuli are increased, the resulting performance decreases. Or in other words, it is difficult to process two tasks concurrently.
Using this information, one of the research questions proposed was if priming a cognitively flexible state induced through RTC could improve performance in concurrent tasks. The hypothesis was that one way to grasp the many concepts of creative thinking is to view it as a function of cognitive flexibility (e.g. the flexible use of remote associations or the overcoming of “functional fixedness”). Our intuition was that RTC can create this flexible state and we wished to investigate whether this might have an impact on performance in concurrent tasks, otherwise known as dual-task paradigms.
We also introduced a “proxy” RTC which required no creative input as a secondary control. Although the sample size was small, the preliminary results show that performance did in fact improve after RTC. Further studies are on-going!
